Authenticity

Note from Sue

A belated Happy New Year to all! Now that we are almost a month into the launch of 2007, it seems an opportune time to take a second look at some of those resolutions you’ve established.

There’s something exhilarating about feeling like we can wipe the slate clean at the start of a year and begin anew. Of course, each day, each minute, presents the opportunity for a fresh start and a new perspective. I get concerned, however, about promises to transform you into an entirely new being at the start of a year, as if it’s as easy as changing your shirt.

I tell many of my clients…I’m not interested in trying to change your spots to stripes or vice versa. Personal commitments that are based on denying a core part of ourselves simply don’t seem to take hold. Rather, our true power is accessed through peeling back the onion to find our most authentic self. Armed with this insight, I find that people are more able to make behavioural shifts that stick, instead of setting themselves up for failure by aiming for complete “reinvention”.

As those of you who read my December newsletter will know, I am working through a personal branding exercise, with Paul Copcutt. I invite you to read my feature article “Reconciling Personal Branding with Authenticity”, to see how I wrestle with the alignment of these two themes.

It is with Authenticity in mind that I am excited to be writing a book chapter as a contributing author to Awakening the Workplace, Volume II. The working title for my chapter is “You Gotta’ Flip it On Its Head: the 7 Ironies of Leadership”. In it I will explore some of the myths and ironies around leadership that get in the way of authenticity and impact.

One of the ways that I currently work with Authenticity is in supporting women in leadership positions and Leaders of Colour who for numerous reasons have felt that the best route to the top is to mask who they are to fit in. If this resonates for you or a direct report, I encourage you to call Development by Design for strategies to access your own true leadership style. I also invite you to visit www.leadersofcolor.com

Happy onion-peeling…make them happy tears!

Feature Article - Reconciling Personal Branding with Authenticity

If you’ve always thought of a “brand” as essentially something that’s created by marketers to enable them to charge more for a product or and have it stand out in a crowd, then the notion of “personal branding” would seem to be completely out of alignment with a philosophy that values authenticity and being the real you.
