Note from Sue: Flipping it in '09

Call me naive but I’m feeling oddly intrigued by what this year will bring. It’s a year when nothing can be taken for granted… when customer-supplier relationships will be tested...when entrepreneurial resilience will be all-important… when proactive leaders will go looking for the industries and organizations that will be sustainable in the future. It’s a time for taking hard looks in the mirror at both an individual and organizational level.

As a coach, helping leaders and organizations to look in the mirror is one of the most valued services I can provide and I am honored that my clients expect nothing less from me everyday.

I’ve noticed that when faced with challenges in the economy, some businesses hunker down and glare at their competition. Instead, I say, “flip this response on it’s head”…instead, celebrate the successes and innovations of your exceptional “competitors”…they are growing your category afterall!

With this perspective in mind, I’m delighted to be attending the upcoming Blue Ocean Strategy conference to help me to look at my business from whole new angles and to think beyond competition to create unknown market space. Stay tuned for blog posts about my insights.

Many senior executives see this as a time to slash leadership development budgets and to focus on quarterly or even weekly results. Of course focus on near-term survival trumps long-term investment! Yet, I’ve been finding that many of my clients are “flipping this principle on it’s head”. People are reaching out that I haven’t seen in several months or even years. They recognize that now is in fact THE time to sharpen their saw and proactively ensure they are in top form. I am delighting in reconnecting to work with these clients and it has been a humbling reminder of the importance of staying in touch with clients in good times and in difficult ones.

When much of the media around us is “doom and gloom”, it’s important to train our eyes on the news that’s good. Some of my client companies are growing by leaps and bounds and achieving great things. (By the way, I’m thrilled to congratulate Capital Paving Inc. on their achievement of the “Paver of the Year” award granted by Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation. This client’s dedication to quality is evident in everything that they do…and they are receiving this award for an unprecedented 3rd time… Bravo!)

So…if you are frustrated by your traditional markets not buying your services…if you are having a difficult time selling your products… how can you flip your business model on it’s head? If the business model you are offering isn’t working, then figure out what will. For my part, I am introducing more group coaching, online alternatives and sharing as much knowledge as I can through social networking (come join the Onboarding Best Practices group—see the link in the sidebar).

I look forward your stories of how you are flipping it—NOT flipping out-- in ’09.

Feature Blog Post: Discuss Expectations With Your New Boss

In keeping with our “flipping it in ‘09” theme, the article for this newsletter offers an important way to flip an uncomfortable relationship with a new boss into one that works.

More often than not, I find that the challenges that surface in early weeks of a boss-direct report relationship arise because expectations have not been aligned.

This doesn’t necessarily mean there is a MIS-alignment…but simply that the alignment conversations haven’t taken place. There are too many assumptions being made.
