Note from Sue

Over my corporate career I found myself operating at my best in highly results-focused environments. There’s nothing like accountability sitting squarely on one’s shoulders as motivation for delivering outcomes.

In my coaching and consulting business, I’ve had the good fortune to work with exceptionally-talented, high-potential leaders with strong track records of success. They know how to get things accomplished. Their drive for results is one of the main reasons they have been promoted to their current positions.

And yet... what’s not always initially evident to these same leaders is that they could have exponentially greater impact if they focused on creating strong relationships first—before results. As I witness them developing in our work together, I see the power of the shifts in their behavior that place relationships as the foundation from which to generate ever more creative ideas and launch initiatives that create true breakthroughs.

Relationships are the enabler of results.

  • they foster trust and buy-in for teams of direct reports;

  • they enable cross-functional collaboration with peers; and

  • they provide the basis for championship from mentors and senior leaders.

You’ll find the theme of relationships woven throughout this newsletter...

  • Our feature article offers a way to approach difficult issues in relationships—whether in your work or personal life.

  • Relationships Before Outputs is the topic of our upcoming free Onboarding Group Coaching call on June 24th

  • Our Ramp Up Right!™ for New Grads program fosters connectivity with your new Gen Y employees for whom meaningful relationships at work are a critical part of early engagement

  • Our Set Up to Soar!™ program invests in coaching relationships to support your diverse new hires and set them up for success.

  • My research with my colleague, Gina Columna in North Carolina, focuses on the relationship between Human Resources and the C-suite. We look at the level of investment in the development of HR leaders relative to their peers in other functions.

In addition to providing information we hope is of value, this newsletter is most importantly a vehicle for being in relationship with you. I welcome your emails or phone calls to discuss ways that we can enrich our relationship to provide you with additional support to do your great work.

Feature Article -  Getting the Issue Out In Front...Literally!

What’s a relationship without an issue?!

Relationships within our work teams, relationships with our customers and suppliers, relationships with our managers…and of course our relationships in our personal lives… ALL encounter issues. When we boil it down, we often end up pointing to a "lack of communication" as the source of the problem. And the issue gets left there...continuing to fester between the parties.
