Note from Sue: Give 'Em a Leg Up!
As many of you know, I've been specializing in the area of "Onboarding" for the past 6.5 years, which refers to the processes for supporting new hires as they ramp-up to productivity and learn their way around the organization's culture and practices.
When I began focusing on Onboarding, few organizations were doing much to support newly hired employees beyond running a 1-2 day orientation program. Over the past couple of years, interest has exploded. In many companies, there's now a strong appreciation for the inordinate cost of "getting it wrong". And proactive leaders recognize that smart people seek out resources to support their success. If the new employer isn't providing Onboarding support for them, they are seeking this coaching directly. Kudos to them!
It's been an exciting evolution.
- Each week brings inquiries from coaches embarking on exploration of this niche.
- Software vendors introduce more efficient and creative onboarding systems to the market.
- Social media is being leveraged like never before to foster connectivity for new hires.
- Leading companies are seeing how their employment branding is enhanced and talent attraction, retention and engagement are exponentially improved when proactive pre-boarding and onboarding processes are established.
For those of you who participate in Twitter, one of the most engaging conversations related to Onboarding recently has been following TheRecruiterGuy through the early days of his onboarding experience at Pepsico. It's fun to get the play-by-play of his onboarding experience through words and pics. And just as engaging as his story is, there are plenty of new hires out there moaning and groaning for the world to see about how disorganized and boring their early experiences have been. In the world of social media... all the laundry hangs out in full view!
Those of you who are interested in exploring Onboarding further are welcome to join the conversation with close to 800 folks globally in our Onboarding Best Practices-Clearing the 90-Day Hurdle Group on LinkedIn (See sidebar)
I also encourage you to visit my blog plus read the article in the HiringSmart newsletter (see sidebar) for a twist on the standard rant against so-called "entitled Millennials" and Onboarding.
Our feature article below doesn't specifically address Onboarding per se, but it does deal with a key skill that is critical to coaching any new employee... or long-serving employee for that matter. The power of taking a coaching approach and "Asking versus Telling" is a theme that can benefit anyone accountable for supporting the development of others.
Finally, next week I'm off to Chicago to participate in IQPC's 4th Annual Onboarding Talent Summit. (see sidebar for link) The line-up of leading organizations speaking about their internal onboarding practices is exceptional. So, if you can't join us there, be sure to visit my blog for highlights over the coming weeks and watch for my Tweets from the conference.
To those of you embarking on a new role... I wish you much success!
