Note from Sue

There’s something about September that brings David Bowie’s song title, “Changes” to mind. No, I’ve never particularly been a die-hard Bowie fan but I do find that it’s an apt theme for this month.

It’s “back to school time” for kids and adults alike. My daughter has just started grade 1. Thankfully she didn’t end her first week with the same question that plagued my son when it was his turn to start first grade 2 years ago…“Mom, how many more weeks until I stop going to school every day?”. I’m hoping he’ll come to embrace a lifetime of learning.

My husband, Dave, has just enrolled in a PhD program in Business- Organization and Management through Capella University in Minneapolis, MN. He’ll be taking this program online for the next 3.75 years on top of his full-time role as a Senior Consultant with Watson Wyatt Worldwide. Lots of changes in routine ahead for our family!

For my business, I have a couple of big changes to announce. First, I will miss working closely with Cindy Greenway of Victoria Business Solutions as she makes changes to her client base. Cindy has provided virtual assistance to Development by Design for the past 2 years. Thankfully, she has referred me to her talented sister-in-law, Christina Greenway of Online Office Assistants. Like Cindy, Christina is based in beautiful Victoria, British Columbia. Christina has been familiar with Development by Design’s business over the past 2 years, so I know we won’t skip a beat. Christina and her team will update the Development by Design and Clearing the 90-Day Hurdle websites, distribute our newsletters, post articles, prepare online marketing initiatives and handle other online transactions.

I am also thrilled to announce that Catherine (Cathy) Allen is joining me in the role of “Sue’s Assistant Extraordinare”. Cathy will be drawing on her over 22 years of executive assistance and human resources roles at Dupont. I am blessed to have found Cathy. Since I’m unable to answer all calls directly, I look forward to our clients having the pleasure of interacting with Cathy to provide the customer service and responsiveness you deserve. (She also threatens to organize my office in no time!)

My final thought about changes is noticing that most of my clients are going through dramatic changes themselves. Afterall, it’s change that tends to bring people to work with Development by Design. Whether you are dealing with a career transition, receiving a challenging new promotion, joining a new organization or inheriting a team that must shift to high performance, I am thrilled to partner with all of you in navigating successfully through the exhilaration and challenge that change brings!

Here’s to the launch of a great Fall season of exciting changes!

Article About Sue and her client, CEO-Canadian Cardiovascular Society

A Promotion can require letting go of the past is the headline for an Executive Coaching column written by Al Emid in the July 19th, 2006 edition of the Financial Post. The article outlines some of the ways that my client was able to effectively transition into her role as CEO through an internal promotion. Such promotions to a significantly higher level of leadership often require deliberate focus on “picking up” and “letting go of” various behaviours. http://www.clearingthe90dayhurdle.com/resources.shtml#articles-sue
