Note from Sue
My
7 year-old daughter can now ride a two-wheel bike without training
wheels. It’s not so much being able to ride a bike that’s worth
sharing, but the process she followed. You see... there was no
apparent process. At the end of last summer we removed her training
wheels and had a couple of back-breaking trips up and down the
street hanging onto the back of her bike seat, supporting her
balance the whole way. Kimberly did NOT relish this level of
dependence and awkwardness. So, this year she announced that the
bike most certainly did NOT to come down from its hanging spot in
the garage. She did NOT plan to ride it. As her same-age friends
began announcing their training wheel-free success stories, she’d
tilt up her chin and declare, "I don’t like riding bikes... I like
my scooter". This was her approach until 3 weeks ago when her friend
asked to borrow her scooter. In turn, Kimberly decided to give her
friend’s bike a go. Presto! No wobbles and no support from Mom and
Dad. She simply hopped on and whipped around the street, up and down
curbs, around corners, thrilling herself with her new expertise (and
terrifying us with her speed). Her confidence and exhilaration were
so astonishing that even her wise old 9 year-old brother was
impressed. When asked how she learned to ride she held my gaze
firmly and said with great assurance..."it must have been the lucky
leaf I found". From my vantage point it seemed that she was simply
old enough to have the gross motor coordination to skip over the
"trying" phase. But Kimberly’s truth is that she could now ride her
bike simply because she BELIEVED she could and she had the power to
make it so.
Her excitement was without bounds! She had clearly manifested a
dream. Every day since Kimberly has rejoiced in her new found
freedom.
So... if you had a lucky leaf...what would you be doing now with
ease? What have you been shying away from because it simply seems
too tough and could involve looking awkward? What if you simply
chose to believe that you now had the power to gain this new skill?
Over the past month my husband and I have manifested a dream of our
own. For several years we have longed for a more spacious, peaceful
property that is further away from the madding crowds of the city
but yet still accessible to our corporate clients. A home surrounded
by the beauty of nature. This August, a country drive found us
stumbling upon a home for sale that met all of the criteria we’d
been listing over the years and simply hadn’t yet found. We viewed
the home and promptly made arrangements to list our own. We sold the
day we listed!
We were then launched on a very rocky ride involving fears of
tenting in November when the owners of our "perfect home" decided
that they might stay put after all. With a deadline to leave our
current house facing us a mere 5 weeks away, we moved into high gear
checking out all possible alternatives. In the back of our minds,
though, we held firmly to the belief that we had already found our
new home. In the end, the current owners decided to move on and they
happily accepted our very tight closing date. Hurray! Phew!
So...on Oct 26th as our family settles into our new home in
Carlisle, Ontario, Development by Design will also be relocating to
a lovely office at one end of our ranch bungalow. If I sound
"dreamy" in my client calls in November... it will be because I am
greeting you from my fireside desk looking out at our field of
evergreens (and swimming pool). We are truly blessed!
So...what are you longing for? How will you manifest it in your
life and your career? I greatly appreciate the notes that many of
you send letting me know of your plans.
And just in case you are finding this newsletter edition far too
"starry-eyed" with all this talk of manifesting dreams, I’ve
included a link to my recent article called "Back to Life, Back to
Reality". While this title sounds highly pragmatic, you should know
that it is featured in a new magazine called Company, the launch of
which is a dream manifested by editor and publisher Anne Day. In
each issue, I have the honor of writing a column called "Real Life:
Real Work" (there’s that practical streak again as counterpoint to
all this dreaming)
May your dreams and your reality find alignment!
